Review - L'Artisan Parfumeur "Dzing!"

I love an odd scent, one that makes me pull my head back in surprise and say with wide eyes,

"Ooh, how strange!"

Made by Olivia Giacobetti, apparently she was given free reign with this and I guess this is what happens when a perfumer lets their hair down.

Before reading any further I encourage you to smell this yourself and form an opinion first before reading my interpretation so that your sniff isn't clouded by expectations.

The official description from L'Artisan Parfumeur reads-

...the scent of saddle leather as pretty girls on horses canter by, sawdust, the rosin on the acrobats’ hands as they arc through the air, black panther fur, fire-eaters and gasoline, the vintage canvas overhead, the caramel scent of candyfloss and toffee apples.

What a brilliant image!

I did not like this when I first smelt it 5 years ago, I now have a different opinion.

To me Dzing smells like fabric plasters with a slight antiseptic quality-

Dzing!

That's the odd thing about smells, your perception of them can change once someone tells you what it's supposed to be or what it reminds them of and suddenly you go "Oh, of course, how did I not notice it before!"

Another reviewer, "Perfumedmaze" writes-

Dzing says something gentler - it's more about hamsters sitting amongst the straw chewing an expensive leather handbag.

This description made me smile because whilst it is different to my sniff, once I imagined this little scene of hamsters chewing through an expensive leather handbag I realised it was spot on with the animalic funk, bit of leather, and straw, just like a circus. Now imagine the logo above but the woman is a tiny figure and she is riding a hamster.

But then this is what one reviewer described it as-

This may be absolutely one of the worst things I’ve smelled in a while.

Isn't it incredible how polarised two responses can be?

For me that's a critical aspect of fragrance-

I do not seek a fragrance that all will like, I seek one that I love. 

I also accept and expect others will disagree with my opinion, and isn't that a good thing?

Let us celebrate the differences!

Anyway, Dzing! is fun, if only for it's shock value.

Is it wearable? Well I think if you like it, you'll love it, and you'll want to wear it. 

A good example of perfume creativity.
